Calvario

Written in Spain in August 1988

“Calvario 245 metres”
the road sign proclaimed.
Such a long short journey.
The midday sun is hot,
no breath or breeze.
Stationed white crosses,
sentries along the track.
The ground is rough and barren;
no sign of life here.
A building scarred by graffiti
shredded by viloent minds.
Too hot to go further:
I have no business.
Calvary is much further
than my mind can go.
