Rewriting the past

For the fainthearted . . .

The last time I had stood on a Landaise beach was 1989.

Landes is one of those French departments that tends to be overshadowed by its more famous neighbours: to the north is the department of the Gironde and the great city of Bordeaux, to the south Pyrenees-Atlantique and the elegance of Biarritz. Landes lies contentedly between them, inland there are vast green forests, on the coast, huge beaches sweeping as far as the eye can see. Jumping puddles

For the fainthearted . . .

The puddle has gone.

I walked across the road to check. There used to be a rut cut into the verge by cattle lorries swinging wide to turn into the farm lane. Their weight cut it deep and packed it hard. When the rain came it lay there, maybe six inches deep.

It was a puddle sufficiently deep to command the interest of small boys. I remember standing there one Sunday evening, feeling sick in the pit of my stomach. The school summer holidays, that had promised to last forever, …

Bravely facing Mrs Murgatroyd

For the fainthearted . . .

There is a whiteboard on the kitchen wall here. It reminds that there are bills to be paid and appointments to be kept.

I had a whiteboard once. It was going to give order and direction to my work and keep my eyes on strategic objectives.

Except I didn’t really need a whiteboard to remind me that I had to see old Mrs Murgatroyd in the nursing home and, however pleased I was after getting away from her unscathed and however much delight I took in wiping her name off …
