You’re the second holidaying blogger that’s philosophising this morning – A large part of the mythology that develops around each of these doctrines, from its liturgy to its rules and taboos, comes from the bureaucracy generated as they develop – it’s so true don’t you think. Religion’s not just become a bureaucracy but a very lucrative one. Dismantling it now would be impossible.

  2. It is, to an extent, spot on I think. This does not make it an indictment of religion, merely the staggering capacity of humanity to feck things up.

  3. The problem lies in disentangling the religion from the bureaucratic accretions. Been reading John McGahern today – not much sign of the founder in the Christianity he describes in Ireland of the 50s and 60s.
