  1. I think if one wasn’t well got in Ireland moneywise, reading McGahern, McCourt or even Peig Sayers cuts a bit too close to the bone for comfort.

  2. I sometimes wonder whether the church dislike for McGahern owed as much to their dislike of his questioning of the economic values as it did to their dislike of his exposure of the abusive nature of some relationships.

  3. Ohh I think it was far far stronger than dislike. For their reaction to him was echoed through the island and the only thing that kept him here was the royalties he got. And I think his characters existed under the engineered economic conditions that lead directly to them reacting as they did.
