Unheroic deeds

For the fainthearted . . .

I worry sometimes that apart from the fact that my heroes are all dead, or, like Inspector Morse, never existed in the first place, there are very few clergy in their ranks, unless you count Don Camillo, who, even had he existed, would by now be dead.

Heroes for me are people like Churchill, fighting with the British establishment on one side and with the “black dog” of depression and self-doubt on the other, and Gandalf, the wizard from the The Lord of the Rings, who struggles alone against overwhelming …

God and Inspector Lewis

For the fainthearted . . .

I picked up the television guide last night and was delighted. There was a new detective drama – Lewis.

I didn’t need to read further – I knew who Lewis was. The Geordie policeman, constantly running to try to keep up with his irascible and arrogant superior, had been a familiar face for years.

I shed a tear when his old boss died, irascible and arrogant he may have been, but Inspector Morse was a hero to me. Perhaps Morse had to die, the wonderful John Thaw was terminally …

Going off the rails

For the fainthearted . . .

Riding back from a rugby match on the DART last night, Michael and I laughed at one of the features of the new carriages. Above the doors there is a row of coloured lights: a red one for each station and orange ones in between, as the train progresses along its route, all the lights turn green. The legend underneath explains that the orange lights show the expected route, which is fine, except that heading south there is only one route. The line goes straight down the coast, where might …

The absence of His presence

For the fainthearted . . .

I had lunch today with an English guy who was in Ireland to advise about evangelism.

I hope the advice he brings with him is from a church very different from my last experience of a Church of England parish, a couple of years ago.

I had got up at 7.15 in order to go to church. The rest of the house was fast asleep and I crept around the house. In an old English house it is hard to creep, every floorboard creaked as I went down the stairs. …

Thoughts on the Conversion of Saint Paul

For the fainthearted . . .

When we read the story of the conversion of Saint Paul, there is one person who is usually overlooked, Ananias. Ananias has every reason to be terrified at having to visit the house in Straight Street where Saul of Tarsus is staying. Saul isn’t just rude to people, he doesn’t just harangue them; he has them arrested; he has them thrown into prison; he has them killed.

Ananias hears God’s voice in a vision and he is none too happy about it. “I have heard many reports about this man …

Marriage – not made in heaven

For the fainthearted . . .

There was a verse in one of Sunday’s readings that struck me very forcibly as I read it.

The Epistle for Year B in the Revised Common Lectionary, the sequence of Bible readings used by most Christians around the world, was very short, just three verses, Paul’s First Letter Corinthians Chapter 7 Verses 29 to 31

The first of those verses says, “What I mean, brothers, is that the time is short. From now on those who have wives should live as if they had none”. I thought about that …
