  1. It was one of those ‘rent-a-priest’ engagements – Church of Ireland clergy cannot refuse to take funerals – and the hatred was so visceral that you came away shocked rather than depressed.

  2. I wondered about him; he had a good job and money in his pocket – thus the coveted car. Maybe he was as bad as the pair of them. It seemed sad, or maybe pathetic, that he couldn’t be laid to rest without his funeral being reduced to a confrontation. Years later, I wonder how the argument seems to them in retrospect.
