FG is the party of big farmers so it would not be concerned about the impact of the cuts on the less well off whether rural or urban; Labour TDs have huffed and puffed but the most significant Labour comments came from Minister Howlin (“a matter for the HSE”) and Tanaiste Gilmore (“regrettable”).

    I can understand why you wrote to the Irish Times as a response to the Oxfam article; I’m not surprised that your letter wasn’t printed because that paper has become one of the most ardent supporters of neo-liberal economics in the country. It wouldn’t be too interested in how smaller farmers are paying the real price of a cheap food policy.
