  1. I find the parallels between the alienation of those left behind in Loyalist areas and those left behind in the de-industrialised areas of England and Wales quite striking. Their traditional jobs are gone – for example the shipyards in East Belfast and in North-east of England and mining in other places – and they are left with, at best, zero-hour contracts in places like Sports Direct warehouses. The political parallels are there too – in East Belfast voting fodder for the Unionist Party in the past and now the DUP; in England and Wales for the Labour Party. The response in England and Wales is leading to an increase in support for UKIP and contributed to the Brexit vote. You articulate the response in Loyalist areas in your blog – who is going to bring hope to these areas?
