Free money

For the fainthearted . . .

An appeal went out for teachers prepared to provide online lessons to a student unable to attend school. Having a light timetable and having competence in two of the required subjects, I volunteered to provide two hours a week of my time.

Only when I was making the arrangements last week did I become aware that there would be paperwork completed, paperwork that related to the Department of Education paying me for the lessons.

I was baffled. How could I be paid for individual work during school time? It seemed …

Why do the Green Party hate me?

For the fainthearted . . .

At sixty-two years of age, I am not the sort of teacher sought after by secondary schools making appointments. On a one year contract with my previous employer, I had to find a new post in September. I applied for forty-three posts in and around Dublin, without success. Eventually, I was offered a maternity leave post at a school which needed someone at short notice. The school is thirty-eight miles from my flat, it takes an hour to drive there.

Once, my diesel car would have been a boon in …

Teaching writing

For the fainthearted . . .

It has been a delight to be given the opportunity this year to First and Third Year students. It is not one of my subjects but English teachers are in short supply and I must be judged competent to teach the junior years.

The greatest challenge in the past two weeks has been to try to get the First Years to engage in personal writing.  It seems an alien concept.

The telephone brought the decline of written communication. To read the letters written by even ordinary people a hundred years …

Self-images

For the fainthearted . . .

Turning the corner, the man nearly walked into me. He was unaware of my presence because he had his phone held up in front of his face and was having a conversation with a person whose face appeared on the screen. Can people no longer conduct a telephone conversation without needing to be seen?

The improvement of mobile networks seems to have meant that it has been possible for the constant sharing of selfies to be superseded by the constant sharing of video of oneself.

Film-goers

For the fainthearted . . .

The €35 subscription for membership of the Irish Film Institute seemes excellent value, it entitles the holder to 10% discount in the Institute’s excellent restaurant. Even if I didn’t go to see a single film, the money saved on meals would make the subscription worthwhile.

Cinema never had an attraction equivalent to that of live events for me. Given the choice of either going to see a film or going instead to see a football match or a music concert, the latter two would always be preferred.

Cinema was much …

An Gaeltacht

For the fainthearted . . .

When driving to Athboy in Co Meath to school for the first time last month, it seemed odd to pass a sign ‘An Gaeltacht’ south of the town. Irish speaking areas are more commonly to be found in coastal counties of the West, not on the gentle plains of Co Meath.

More typical of the Gaeltacht areas is the island of Cape Clear, a place I first visited ten years ago.

There was no car ferry to the island; vehicles had arrived via a builders’ barge or by being carried …
