  1. Land meant survival. And the structure of law meant it was very difficult to establish a permanent renting situation where all got their share in perpetuity. So they had to fight to the utter destruction of the asset for it was likely no other income was coming into any of the family. It was designed that they should do so.

  2. It is odd, though, that such situations should pertain into our own time. I am familiar with McCabe like characters who would expend huge resources on small amounts of land that will never bring monetary recompense that will match the cost
