Choosing a story — 2 Comments

  1. Well done, Ian

Your sermon has got me thinking! I like the openness and honesty of your approach to religion today and I hear you loud and clear. I’m all for freedom of choice and expression but I’m compelled to ask why it has to be ‘which’ story do you prefer?

I come from a scientific background and therefore I believe in the concept of ‘survival of the fittest’. But I also believe that we have a meaning and a purpose in life and therefore ‘how’ we choose to lead our lives, will affect our very survival.

I don’t mean to be awkward but I fancy a combination of the two stories 😀

  2. Steph,

I have no problem with evolutionary science, I think faith is about those things which are and will remain outside its parameters. I think a need to believe in justice shapes my preference for the story of Jesus. Without resurrection, without a defeating of death, then there is no justice for the poor. On this Holocaust Day, I have to believe in a life to come for those who suffered at the hands of the Nazis (and, I’m afraid, no life to come for those responsible).
