  1. The thinking of amongst the IGS at all points was that a breakthrough was designed to open a gap so the cavalry could hit and harry thus preventing a new line forming further back. It was the core thinking in all European armies. It wasn’t until Pétain started the bite and hold, to be copied by some in the British area that the thinking changed.
