  1. Irving was a true gentleman.

    He came from Co Monaghan and said that when he saw what the Nazis were doing to Europe, he could not stand by and do nothing. He went across the border and enlisted in the British army, fighting in North Africa and up through Italy.

    On the wall of his dining room was a painting, a Nazi swastika surrounded by nightmarish images. “I painted that,” he told me, “it came from what I saw.”
