Ireland’s punishment — 4 Comments

  1. Almost as good as the Rt. Rev Graham Dow arguing that bad weather is God’s wrath on our immoral society.

“This is a strong and definite judgement because the world has been arrogant in going its own way,” he said. “We are reaping the consequences of our moral degradation, as well as the environmental damage that we have caused.”

  2. I’m not familiar with Bishop Dow – does he also believe the Earth is orbited by the sun?

  3. Thanks Ian, you have expressed in a blunter way how I feel about the apocalyptic attitude to belief – my latest blog post is an extended meditation on my late Grandmother’s spirituality, so much of it was fear based and the more lurid the message of the “apparition” the more it rang true to her. The unasked question in the post is was Ireland a happier and more Christian place as a result? Private piety didn’t extend to actual Christian charity in most cases.

  4. Much of Irish Christianity seemed to rest on individual, personal (and sometimes esoteric) devotions
